As you know, the SBA List fought vigorously against the abortion mandate in Obamacare. Ultimately, unborn babies and vulnerable women were betrayed by a group of self-described “pro-life” Democrats – who turned their backs on those who elected them and gave Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi the votes they needed to pass the biggest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade.
Your SBA List vowed to defeat every single one of those “pro-life” Democrats who caved – and ultimately, we defeated 15 of 20 in last November’s mid-term elections. We did it by aggressively educating their constituents about their betrayal using every means of communication possible.
One of those Representatives we targeted and defeated was Congressman Steve Driehaus of Ohio.
During his re-election race, Rep. Driehaus did everything he could to muzzle the truth we were trying to share– even using criminal statute against us with the threat of stiff fines and jail time. Your SBA List fought back every step of the way. We refused to be intimidated and continued our efforts to share the truth about his vote for taxpayer funding of abortion in Obamacare.
After we defeated him, Rep. Steve Driehaus responded by filing a federal lawsuit charging us with “depriving a person of their livelihood.”
I know how absurd it sounds. And Pro-Life Advocate, I might be able to laugh about it if I wasn’t about to cry.
You see, I just received a bill for $76,000 in legal fees for just the past two months alone.
This outrageous lawsuit is bleeding us dry and I need your urgent financial support.
We absolutely cannot let Steve Driehaus achieve his ultimate goal: to shut us down.
This court battle has been draining us for months, Pro-Life Advocate.
Already, we’ve had to pay nearly $164,000 in legal fees since the beginning of this federal lawsuit. This enormous amount has been covered by generous grants and donations, including incredible support from our friends at the Alliance Defense Fund.
But with $76,000 in outstanding bills and even more coming our way as the lawsuit continues, I need all SBA List family members to help to pay off this debt and to ensure we have the funds to continue fighting this battle in court.

You see, Pro-Life Advocate, my team did its best to budget for our legal bills at the beginning of the year. But then Lila Rose released undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood employees aiding and abetting in the alleged sex trafficking of girls as young as 13. I knew the SBA List needed to put all its strength behind efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.
And we did. We spent over $800,000 in the fight to defund Planned Parenthood. We ran radio ads. Our Education Fund ran a television ad featuring former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life activist, Abby Johnson. We ran newspaper ads. We did a grueling bus tour through key states and Congressional districts. We aggressively lobbied Congress and armed key lawmakers with the best facts and figures to help them win the debate.
We gave it our all, and while we may have fallen short in the budget negotiations, we dealt Planned Parenthood a big black eye that is now being seen at the state level. In fact, just yesterday, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels signed a bill that completely defunds Planned Parenthood of all its funding. This would not have happened had it not been for our efforts at the federal level.
The fight to defund Planned Parenthood is far from over, and your SBA List will be leading the way.
But…
In order to continue our work, we can’t let a disgruntled, defeated politician shut us down.
That’s his goal. He wants to shut us down by burying us in court filings and suffocating us with hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills.
We refuse to be bullied. We must continue to be voices for those voiceless unborn babies who will never experience the joys of Life because of politicians like Rep. Driehaus who turned his back on them.

I do strongly believe that we will win this case. Even the liberal ACLU has backed up our right to free speech, writing in an Amicus Brief in our support,
“The statute fails for the same reasons that the Sedition Act has been condemned by history. The people have an absolute right to criticize their public officials, the government should not be the arbiter of true or false speech and, in any event, the best answer for bad speech is more speech.”
Even the ACLU – a strong supporter of abortion – knows that Rep. Steve Driehaus has gone too far.
And I believe that the court will rule this way. But we must get to the finish line.
We’ve been blessed with a generous group of donors who have covered $164,000 of the legal fees we’ve accumulated.
But as I said earlier, I just received a bill totaling $76,000 that covers the last two months which have been especially intense for our legal team.
